The Jimmy P’s Legacy
In the heart of Willmar, Minnesota, at 1600 11th Ave NE, a door that looks like it belongs to an unassuming building swings open into another era. Welcome to Jimmy P’s—Willmar’s own Prohibition-era speakeasy, where candlelight flickers off hand-laid brick walls, jazz drifts through the air, and the password is simply knowing where to find it.
The name honors Jimmy P, a real-life safe-cracker who plied his trade across the Midwest in the mid 1900s. Stories of his daring midnight jobs, masterful touch with a tumbler, and uncanny ability to vanish into the night still linger in local lore. Whether he ever passed through Willmar or not, his legend became the perfect muse for a modern hideaway that celebrates the grit, glamour, and rebellion of that bygone age.
Jimmy P’s was conceived as a love letter to the 1920s speakeasy—secret entrances, whispered reservations, and the thrill of stepping off the street into something forbidden—while embracing the entertainment and hospitality standards of today. The vision came to life in late 2025, with a super-secret soft opening in early January 2026 that quickly became the worst-kept secret in Kandiyohi County. By mid-February the “safe” had officially cracked open to the public.
100 years later
What sets Jimmy P’s apart is its soul
Generational Italian recipes handed down through family kitchens and now served in an atmosphere that feels equal parts old-world tavern and high-end lounge. Think handmade pastas, slow-simmered sauces, crisp pizzas pulled from a fire brick oven, and charcuterie boards that could make a bootlegger proud. The cocktail list pays tribute to the golden age of mixology—classics done right, plus creative riffs that nod to the speakeasy spirit without ever feeling gimmicky.
The space itself blends 1920s elegance with contemporary comfort: tufted leather booths, brass accents, low lighting that makes everyone look like a movie star, and a soundtrack that moves effortlessly from live jazz to today’s coolest vinyl. It’s fine dining that doesn’t take itself too seriously—reservations recommended for the early evening seating (4–9 p.m.), walk-ins welcome once the night heats up (9 p.m. to midnight), Thursday through Saturday.
In just a few short weeks since opening, Jimmy P’s has already become the place locals take out-of-town guests when they want to show off what Willmar can do. It’s where anniversary dinners feel cinematic, where first dates spark over perfectly chilled martinis, and where anyone with a sense of adventure can step into a story that began more than a half-century ago with a safe-cracker named Jimmy P.
So if you’re in Willmar and hear about a place where the 1920s never ended—but the service, the food, and the cocktails are better than they ever were—now you know the history.
The safe is cracked. Come on in. Just don’t tell everybody.
